Full Biography
Kyle Shewfelt is a serial optimist who believes in the power of a high five. He speaks, writes, coaches and thinks obsessively about high performance and is completely addicted to the pursuit of excellence. Kyle has made it his mission to help others see their potential and actively engage in their quest to achieve it.
As a 3 time Olympian (2000, 2004, 2008), a 3 time World Championships medalist and the 2004 Olympic Champion, Kyle is Canada’s most successful gymnast in history. His accomplishments redefined “what’s possible” in the minds of the next generation.
What makes his athletic journey even more remarkable is the courage he showed in the face of adversity.
In August of 2007, Kyle suffered a devastating injury in a training accident in Stuttgart, Germany. A millisecond of misjudgment on a landing led to two broken legs, just below his knees. Kyle embarked on the biggest comeback of his career and had only 11 months to recover in time for the 2008 Beijing Games. After a journey of commitment and expansion, he qualified. His road back inspired as many people as his gold medal performance had four years earlier.
Now retired from gymnastics, he is an honoured member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and stays heavily involved in the world of sport as a mentor with Gymnastics Canada, a broadcaster with CBC and CTV and co-creator of the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival. He is an ambassador for Right To Play, Kidsport and the Special Olympics and is a member of the board for the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport.
He is a gifted performance coach who helps his clients strike a balance between appreciating “what is” and aggressively chasing “what can be”. He is a talented speaker who takes his listeners on a journey through courage, adversity and the pursuit of excellence. He speaks about potential – challenging our limits, finding opportunities within obstacles, setting ourselves up for success and staying focused on a vision. Kyle believes that life is about being YOUR best and holding yourself accountable to actions that are congruent with that standard every single day.
He also knows the secret to happiness…you should probably ask him what that is…;)
